A Journey to Stability and Dignity

A Journey to Stability and Dignity: Supporting Pina Miguel Through MISI Community Solutions

My name is Vita Stolyarchuk, and I have the privilege of working as a Housing Navigator (HN) with MISI Community SolutionsIn my role, I assist members in finding and securing safe, stable, and affordable housing through the Housing Transition Navigation Program. Every member’s story is unique. However, one of the most meaningful journeys I’ve been a part of is that of Mr. Pina Miguel.

Understanding the Member’s Needs

When Mr. Miguel came to MISI in September of last year, he was searching for a place that could truly accommodate his specific needs. Mr. Miguel is blind and depends on the full-time assistance of his son. Because of his impairment, he required a home that was safe, accessible, and spacious enough for his assistive devices and daily activities.

From our first meeting, I could sense his determination to find a space that would allow him to live comfortably and independently. Mr. Miguel preferred a duplex-style home. Specifically, he wanted no stairs, an open layout, and plenty of natural light. He knew exactly what he needed, and it was my role to help him achieve that vision.

How the Housing Transition Navigation Program Works

At MISI Community Solutions, we support members step-by-step through every part of their housing journey. The program begins with a tenant screening and housing assessment to identify a member’s barriers and preferences. From there, we develop a personal housing support plan that includes both short- and long-term goals.

As Housing Navigators, we:
  • Search for and present housing options tailored to each member’s situation.

  • Assist with applications, documentation, and communication with landlords.

  • Help with benefits advocacy, such as obtaining identification, income verification, or disability-related documentation.

  • Support members in securing deposits, arranging furniture, and ensuring their living environment is safe and move-in ready.

  • Maintain consistent check-ins to provide emotional and logistical support through the entire process.

Our goal is not only to find housing but to ensure stability, dignity, and comfort for every individual we serve.

Working Closely With Pina Miguel

Over the following months, Mr. Miguel and I worked closely together. We had regular check-ins to review housing leads and discuss which properties would best suit his needs. His criteria were very specific, and understandably so. After all, accessibility was not optional; it was essential.

There were challenges along the way, as accessible duplexes can be difficult to find. Nevertheless, I remained persistent, making numerous calls to property managers, advocating on his behalf, and ensuring his story was heard.

Preparing for Move-In and Furniture Assistance

Once the housing was secured, I walked Mr. Miguel through the next steps, including furniture assistance through the Anthem Blue Cross furniture program. Together, we reviewed what items he needed for safety, comfort, and daily functionality. Mr. Miguel selected furniture that would best fit his new home, for example, several practical items from Amazon to accommodate his space and accessibility needs.

Throughout this process, I ensured that he understood every step—from the approval timeline to delivery expectations—and that he felt empowered in making his own decisions.

Stability, Dignity, and Comfort

After months of searching, planning, and collaboration, Mr. Miguel finally moved into his new duplex. This was a space that truly met his needs. Seeing the relief and joy on his face was incredibly fulfilling. He now has a home where he feels safe and comfortable. In addition, his son can continue to support him in a stable environment.

Working with Mr. Miguel reminded me of why I chose this field. Housing isn’t just about finding a roof over someone’s head—it’s about helping individuals reclaim their dignity and stability, especially those who face physical or emotional barriers. Mr. Miguel was an absolute pleasure to work with. His patience, persistence, and optimism throughout this journey were inspiring. I am deeply grateful to have been part of his story and proud to see him settled in a place he can finally call home.
